Szendi Werner (born in 1966 in Guessing, Austria, childhood and youth in Harmisch, Burgenland) currently lives and works in Vienna and Kritzendorf. He discovered his artistic talent at the age of 16. The creation of several sacral paintings for churches familiarized him early on with the techniques of the Old Masters. He uses pencil, watercolor, acrylic, oil, gold leaf, stones, as well as mental and spiritual energies for his works.
After intensive chromatic studies, he is enthralled with the opportunities to influence people by choosing the correct colors. With his commissioned works, he fulfills individual needs regarding special color and energy, as well as environmental requirements to bring about specific changes.
His light and shadow technique imparts a unique atmosphere of harmony and peace to the paintings. Spheres have a special effect for him, with him gladly introducing them instinctively into his paintings as magical elements. The sphere is a symbol of the universe and is cultural at the same time, for example as an orb symbol of power on Earth – our planet.
Through his paintings, he wishes to express his deep feelings for freedom, peace, love and healing in the world.
In search of the secret of creation, which should deeply touch people’s souls, I discovered that I should not confine myself to the level of my five senses. I not only portray what I see with my two eyes, but also what I see through my emotional eye. To create an eternal, remarkable work of art and to be a true creator, I combine with the divinity, taking elements from it and giving these to my works. Prayer, meditation and contemplation are resources for creative work. The works of art created in this manner reflect a healing energy on the soul of the beholder.

Hi Werner! You have a very interesting story between art and energy. Could you tell us how this connection started?
From a young age, I was concerned with how colours, shapes, light and shadow affect the viewer. Strong feelings and emotions can arise, such as anger, fear, joy, love, sadness, hate and surprise. I realized very quickly that images can generate both positive and negative energy flow, which then also manifest themselves. Between the ages of 18 and 20, I made some oil paintings for churches. They were mostly copies of old masters, where I learned a lot about light and shadow techniques, composition and emotions.
The Catholic Church in particular is good at portraying suffering and death. At that time I decided that in the future I would only create with positive energy, because I know about the strong manifestation power of works of art. I also deal intensively with the power and effect of symbols and signs and use them very specifically in my works of art. I love strong, bright colours, but also contrasts, light effects and magnetic tensions on the canvas. Colours have a very high vibration and you can generate a lot of positive energy with the right use of colours, I believe.
You mention in your artist statement that you fulfill individual needs, regarding special colours and energies. How does it work?
For several years, my wife and I have been studying the effects of colours on people. We can tell from the dates of birth which colours are important for human development. We give tips on how small changes in color can steer life in the right direction. With the power of the right colours and my symbolic images, we have been able to achieve amazing effects so far.
Do you have an artist who has inspired your own art practice or any artwork in particular that has influenced you?
I have been working as a self-taught artist for almost 40 years. I never went to an art school or a painting course. Looking back, I am very happy about it, because I was able to go my own way of self-discovery and personal growth. At a young age, I was fascinated by the masters of realism and naturalism (Michelangelo, Raffael), then impressionism (Monet) and finally surrealism (Dali). Basically, however, I believe that nature in its perfection and beauty is the greatest teacher and your own intuition and imagination. If the artist succeeds in establishing a higher connection through meditation and contemplation, he is able to create masterpieces. The viewer of the work of art comes into contact with higher areas and feels energies that the artist has perceived.
Would you say that your style or technique have been changing through time?
Yes, of course. That’s a good thing, because it shows my personal change and further progress. At the beginning, I tried many media and techniques – pencil, watercolor, oil, acrylic. At the moment, I prefer acrylic paints because I appreciate the luminosity and speedy processing and mixing options. In between, however, I am always gripped by my love for oil paints, which enable even finer work. The motifs in my pictures follow my intuition and personal development. My work is quite diverse and will continue to be so in the future, because I love my artistic freedom in expression. I think the positive energy of my pictures has increased over time.
We see this very strong spiritual side in your art works. Could you tell us how people interact with it? Do they feel what you want to share?
At the beginning of my artist career, I painted religious commissioned works. Soon I realized that there had to be more than religion. It didn’t make sense to me then why one religion should be better than another. Why one preaches tolerance and charity but does not live it in practice. Spirituality goes far beyond any religion and deals with questions like: Who am I? Where do I come from? What’s the meaning of life? Where do I go after death? For me, true spirituality means the search for the divine in us and unconditional love for nature (mother earth) and all living beings. I always write short texts for my pictures that reflect my thoughts and intentions while painting. I notice especially at exhibitions that the energy in my pictures works.

Energetic and emphatic people keep confirming the strong energy field that is being built up. A key experience for me was years ago at an exhibition in Salzburg/Austria when a mother led her 40-year-old son in a wheelchair into the exhibition room. For several minutes he looked at my work of art “Silence” from about 8 meters away. I then told him that he could go all the way to the work of art because there was enough space. He said: No, thanks, it is not necessary. I can feel the strong energy of the picture up to here.

Anything planned for your future? New media, art residencies, projects that you would like to share with us?
I want to paint even more powerful, energetic pictures and continue my exhibit worldwide. Last year, some of my artwork was exhibited in two museums in China. Some other countries are still on my exhibition list. I would also like to continue doing virtual 3D exhibitions in parallel (actual exhibition “SACRED ART” you can find here: https://www.szendi.at/exhibitions/).
